![]() The preliminary findings of the recently conducted joint Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) estimated that the overall national cereal production for the 2022/23 cropping season was higher than last year and near the five-year average despite reductions in the area planted. The high cost of living is continuing to reduce households’ purchasing power for their food and non-food needs. The CPI is being driven primarily by increases in the cost of education, and food and beverages, which are 89 and 65 percent higher than last year, respectively. From November to December, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained stable, although annual inflation declined to 87 percent. On January 27, the SDG exchange rate was trading at 594 SDG/USD on the parallel market and 585 SDG/USD in most commercial banks, compared to 485 and 440 SDG/USD in January 2022 in the parallel market and the commercial banks, respectively. Sudan's macroeconomic situation remains poor in January 2023 due to persistent low foreign currency reserves, longstanding political instability, the weak exchange rate, and the high inflation rate. These areas will likely continue to face higher-than-normal humanitarian food assistance needs during the post-harvest period through to the beginning of the lean season in May 2023. Additionally, many conflict-affected and poor households in Darfur, Blue Nile, Kordofan, Kassala, and Red Sea states continue to face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes in January as household access to food and income remains low due to the impact of insecurity and high food prices. Historical price data sets (spanning 2012 to date) areonly available for some markets.The recently concluded harvests are improving household food access in most areas of Sudan, leading to a reduction in the proportion of households facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes however, Stressed (IPC Phase 2) outcomes remain widespread due to the impact of the poor macroeconomic conditions. Uganda maize sometimes reaches Wau and Aweil whenthe border between South Sudan and Sudan borders is closed. Cereal supplies in Juba,Torit, Bor, and Rumbek are mostly sourced from Uganda. Aweil, Wau, Kuajok, and Bentiu are mostly supplied in cereals from Khartoumand El Obeid (Sudan), while Malakal is also normally supplied by Renk and Kosti (Sudan). The most important local wholesale market is in Renk, a mechanized cerealproducing area in Upper Nile state. The main retail markets are mostly located in the County capitals, including: Juba, Aweil, Malakal, Wau, Torit, Renk,Kuajok, Bor, Rumbek, and Yambio. Maize grain and flour are imported fromUganda and available year-round because of the bi-modalrainfall pattern and carryover stocks. Long-cycle sorghum is harvested betweenDecember and January in Central and Eastern Equatoriastates, Greater Lakes, Western Bahr El Ghazal, Warrap, andUpper Nile states. Harvestseasons vary geographically and by production system.Short-cycle sorghum harvested between July and August inGreater Equatoria states and between September andOctober in Greater Bahr el Ghazal, Greater Upper Nile statesand Jonglei states. Groundnuts are important for the rural poor inNorthern Bahr El Ghazal, Warrap, and Lakes states. Sorghum andmaize are generally substitutes, but preferences are shiftingtowards maize over time, especially in the southern halfofSouth Sudan. Maize, sorghum, and groundnuts are the most importantfood commodities for poor rural households in South Sudan.Flour and wheat (as bread) are more important for middleincome and rich households in urban areas. For each FEWS NETcountry and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowingusers to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity.
